   Yeah I was class of 99 and our state weighted your GPA based on the difficulty of class you took. An honors or AP class was worth more points, which could drive your GPA up.

   They can tell the difference cause colleges are aware of what weighted grades are. Also, at least on my transcript, it shows both my weighted and unweighted GPA. I was in all AP classes and was teased for being the dumb one of my nerdy friend group, cause I only had a 4.1 weighted while everyone else had over 4.5. AP Chemistry was BS though for real 😒 lol

   GenX here. I got a whole 1.0 added on. My High School added 1.0 to the IB classes and 0.5 to the AP classes. AP was pick and choose. IB you had to do the whole shebang. So some IB students "dropped down" to AP in the subjects they liked, general in others. I wasnt the most organized student so I graduated with like a 3.75 (with the weighting.) We definitely had some 4.5s and 4.7s. Hard to get a perfect 5.0 because PE and a lot of electives weren't IB.

   I got extra “points” for my AP classes, so even after getting a C in Advanced Math, with a full load of AP, I graduated with over a 4. Don’t remember now what it was, it was 35 years ago.

   Some systems give higher scores for AP or Honors classes so you can get a 5 in those classes. In general though, grades now are super inflated compared to when we were in high school and college due to the shift in pressure being put on teachers and schools now and less responsibility on students themselves.
