This would have been before the home video rental market was taking off. A lot of movies got replayed at drive ins. I remember watching Star Wars at the drive in and that would have definitely been a replay.

The summer of 1982. That's when it came out in theaters. But it was so popular it could have been showing at drive-ins in 83'-84'.

IF and it’s a big if….you did, it likely was 2nd run movie. Most drive ins closed by the early 80’s (at least in my area) and most showed 2nd run (after movies initial release they go on 2nd run/discount theaters the way they money is spilt is very different) or older movies.
