   Started high school in 87. Before I started, I heard rumors of all kinds of hazing that could/would occur. I never had it happen to me and never of it happening to anyone else. Some of the rumors I heard: Being shoved in a trash can and rolled down the long hill Being locked in your locker. Upperclassmen trying to sell you pool passes or elevator passes (we has neither). Those are the ones I remember. Probably were others I heard might happen but never heard of them actually happening.

   Came from Kentucky to NJ in the 8th grade. The level of hazing/bullying that year was almost unbearable. Not from the guys - I just threatened to beat them up after school. No one really fought in this NJ school and that’s all I did where I came from. That was a culture shock. But the pretty girls pretending to like me, making fun of me, laughing at me in front of everyone - that’s what undid me. I didn’t know how to fight against that. Just endured it. A whole year of that is pretty damaging to a kid in his formative years.

   I can't speak for fraternities, but as far as sorority hazing, a HUGE part of the game was to pretend there was some horrible, evil piece of hazing yet to come - call it "The Ultimate Sacrifice," I guess. Then, one sister would argue against it or even claim that there had been lawsuits or incidents at another school. We'd hold a "vote" on doing it that we made the pledges attend. A couple girls would build it up as terrible and traumatic and a relic of the "bad old days," while a couple of other girls would insist that since they had to go through it, ALL sisters of, uhh, Mu Mu Mu (like I'm saying my sorority here, yeah, right...) should have to go through it. The debate part was where everyone got to ham it up and start accusing each other of all kinds of shit. I've heard other chapters even stretched it as far as someone motioning to disband the chapter. At the end, the president or vice-president (if the president wasn't available) revealed the whole thing was a show, and there never was an "Ultimate Sacrifice." The moral is supposed to be that sisters fight all the time, but in the end, we all stand together. Then we swore everyone in - all that shit we made them memorize and whatever, it was just to mess with them.

   High school in the 90s hazing happened but not so much in band which was my safe haven. It was more prep for parade inspections. They would put you at attention then try to make you move or flinch. Nothing to crazy. I think one guy slapped my ass even though that would never actually happen. Was more intended to prepare you to be stared down by a marine doing a formal inspection. Making eye contact as a freshman was actually intimidating.

   We didn’t have hazing in school. I remember our elementary school teachers warning us about being hazed as high school freshman, but then we got there and absolutely nothing happened. There was hazing for frats at my college, but then there was a really bad incident that made the news, and that all kind of stopped.
