Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

It’s after every festival ever. “Giant mess to clean up after giant party”. Burning Man at least attaches your camp name to your clean up score. Affecting where you get placed the next year, even then it takes weeks for paid staff to clean up.

I’m familiar with the regional burns … some used them to prep for Burning Man as they were going. Each one has its own vibe. I’m not trying to save or shutter Burning Man. I just don’t like how people try to sell it for something it hasn’t been for years. The corporate retreat types won’t show up to regional burns … it’s not fancy and you can’t brag about it or get ego fulfilling pics/videos. Most importantly though … they can’t show off their wealth and access to those who have little to none. Not in the numbers they need for their greed to feel satisfied. If you allow people like that to take over portions of a festival it attracts others with similar fake as fuck vibes. I mean an army of busses, hired help, and exclusivity. I guess Coachella just wasn’t good enough for them!

Burning Man’s cultural caché peaked a few years ago. It was underground for a long time, and then popular but still not mainstream, and then finally mainstream. Now people mostly associate it with tech workers and influencers, which kinda have a negative valence. I went in 2008 and again in 2013. And it was cool, but… the second time I went I was like “oh great it’s like all the people I work with.” Also a lot more motor homes in 2013. In 2008 it still felt pretty underground. Truthfully though? All cultural connotations aside, I’d guess it’s still probably a great time. But I honestly never understood people who go every year. It really is something you only need to do once. Even for myself I think some of my disappointment in 2013 was that I’d already done it once, and so I wasn’t really “wowed” by it the second time. I can’t imagine going every year. Spending all that time and money just to have the same vacation over and over and over again? There’s a whole world out there to explore…
