Omg who remembers that song in the 80's they played constantly called "We Are The World"? It played like every 15 minutes on the radio. I met Quincy Jones at D'Angelo record release party in I think 93? I talked to him for awhile and asked him what his biggest regret was and he said "the novelty of "we are the world." I totally forgot how bad that song was. Oh and I met Prince there also and he was a Bible thumping prick.

Prince has like 500 plus songs in his vault he lived and breathed music.

Prince is similar. He really did have a lot of finished albums shelved in the vault that are amazing, but there was just as many drafts that didn’t deserve to be released. And I know he agreed bc he often would reincorporate the shelved songs into something, years later.

The idea of a “vault” changes a lot in the digital era. Prince had a vault when you had to record and engineer on instruments. While the songs could still be unfinished, that level of work would at least encourage an amount of finish to the songs (getting out microphones and putting to tape, etc). The way studios work with digital music now, it is so easy to write and record that if you don’t have a filter, you can easily make an album in a day or faster. All that is to say, not ever excited to hear musicians talk about their “vault”. There maybe a few gems in there, but it’s most likely just unfinished music
