   No, I understand that you’re curious it’s just that it seems you’re so going so hard defending her against a minute group of people. Theres always gonna be haters on the Internet, thats not exclusive to Taylor Swift.

   I think there’s a difference between not liking someone and being obsessed with hating them. I don’t particularly like Taylor Swift, and I have my reasons, but I’m not going to spend my time seeking out posts about her just to tell everyone how much I dislike her. For me, part of it is that I’ve always felt her public image leans heavily into the idea of being this self-made, relatable songwriter, while she’s also someone who came from a very privileged background and has had access to an enormous amount of industry support, professional writers, producers, musicians, marketing, etc. I know she does write and contribute to her music, so I’m not saying she literally does nothing herself. I just find the way that whole narrative is presented to the public a little irritating. Then there’s the fact that she’s so unbelievably ubiquitous. Her music, advertising, news coverage, celebrity coverage, social media, you can feel like you’re constantly being exposed to her whether you actually care about her or not. On top of that, her public persona can come across to me as very wealthy and disconnected from the problems an average person deals with. Those are reasons for me personally not to be a fan. But that doesn’t mean I have some burning need to tell everyone about it every time her name comes up. If someone else loves her, that’s great. Life’s short, so whatever makes you happy.

   i think part of it is that hating taylor has become its own form of internet culture at this point. she’s so culturally omnipresent that even people who don’t care about her have formed an entire identity around disliking her. and because she’s such an easy shorthand for everything people already dislike about celebrity culture, capitalism, fandom, femininity, etc., she gets dragged into conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with her. at a certain point it stops being “i don’t like taylor swift” and becomes “taylor swift is a subject i have chosen to repeatedly engage with because i enjoy talking about why i don’t like taylor swift.” which is exactly why it’s so weird when she gets brought up in completely unrelated posts 😭

   Because it’s important to be critical around extremely rich people. You also assume that her “haters” only “hate on” (see: provide valid criticism for) her only. Taylor Swift is a billionaire, has zero care for the environment and climate change, all while maintaining an extraordinarily massive devout fanbase that will do anything she says. Not only are the things I mentioned extremely valid of criticism outside of her music, but the fact that she has such profound influence over hundreds of millions of young people warrants critique. She actively encourages these parasocial relationships with her fanbase as well. She also cosplays as an academic, which she is not. This also bothers me a ton because not only does it take actual hard work to get a PhD in something, but it also contributes to the ongoing problem in our society of unqualified people being placed on pedestals and being revered as an “expert” when they’re not. Everyone like her as a prominent public figure deserves criticism. And as a reminder, just because she’s being criticized, it doesn’t mean that others aren’t simultaneously. Like in the grand scheme of things, people like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are exponentially worse than her in regard to their negative impact on society. But because these guys exist does that mean we should let everyone “not as bad but still problematic” just continue doing problematic shit without question? And just because you see someone criticizing Taylor Swift doesn’t mean that they’re not “hating on” much worse people significantly more often. It takes a few seconds, to at most, a few minutes to make a comment abt a public figure. As a final point, any kind of celebrity worship (or wealth worship) is complete trash, and no, hating on this cultural phenomenon is not “just as bad” as being a stan.

   Eh. A lot of celebrities get hate, but Taylor Swift does seem to have a particularly popular snark sub. Weirdly, a lot of them were fans who turned against her. I don’t even know if I’m familiar enough with her to guess why it might be, but I think it’s because she cultivated parasocialism in her fandom? She built a fandom around gossiping about her exes and drew in a lot of people who are chronically online and gossip a lot. Anyways, that’s my theory. I feel like influencers often face a similar trajectory.
