   I don’t think that’s true. Adams, Deblasio, and Bloomberg all did various pension shenanigans to ease budget deficits.

   adams officials are being prosecuted, his chief of staff was just arrested a few weeks ago. Adams while mayor was being prosecuted, except Trump admin intervened. war crimes is a different matter, i agree those won't be pursued against US officials for political reasons.

   I mean, I think the mayor makes too little. It's one of the most important jobs in the city and not even close to paying what a successful white collar position here pays. We shouldn't be in a position where a huge portion of potential candidates opts out because they can't afford to take the job. Otherwise, you end up with 1) Inexperience (not always bad, but often); 2) People that never really saw success (Adams), or 3) People that have so much money already it doesn't matter (Bloomberg). What about the 40 year old lawyer or surgeon or executive? There's a reason we don't have young, successful professionals running for office.

Fully agreed, but I'd add that unfortunately Adams "favors" were like any product...low prices are enabled by mass production and economy of scale. His admin was almost certainly very _good_ at getting away with corruption if you look at it like a batting average. But much like bomb building, you only get to fail once

   Strong agree. With the last mayoral pay raise being in 2016, this "raise" doesn't even keep up with inflation (~40%) - which makes this more of a pay cut than anything. In general, it's bad practice to have an established precedent of politicians not making much money: you're not going to get the best and most competent intellectual talent for a measly $250,000 in the heart of New York City, and you are going to get people (like Adams) who look to outside contributions for money. When this country was established Washington was paid 2% of the entire federal budget and even twentieth-century presidents like Taft took home $2,500,000 (inflation adjusted) annually. This is obviously sane policy, but no politician wants to run on the platform of "let's increase politician salary tenfold" - even if in the long-run that pay raise is orders of magnitude cheaper than it is to deal with the corruption that comes with poorly paid public officials.
