Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Me and all my friends are young and poor and live way uptown or in deep queens or brooklyn and we all use the AMC Kips Bay all the time. It's an enormous theater that has a huge amount of screens and is conveniently located and also inlcuded in the AMC A-Listers program which is straight up probably the best deal of any business in the country. NYC is a movie place, people expect you to see movies, so many movies are about NYC, it is inextricably linked culturally to our city, so its unsurprising that shutting down a beloved theater would generate city-wide outrage. There's also the hidden thread of theaters being one of the last few physical third spaces, watching movies in theaters being viewed somewhat as a protest activity against modern internet/streaming/scrolling activities, etc. Honestly from what I'm seeing, the outrage is from everyone, not just Kips Bay.

Too fucking bad. It's an AMC!!! It is not the government's job to prop up failing chain movie theater locations no matter how many people whine and cry about it! Hell, if those 60,000 cared that much they should have, I dunno, tried *going there* while it was open so that the location would be profitable.

  3. Comment

If third spaces are the issue, why a theater...? It's not really a space to meet up and interact with people. Coffee shops, dance studios, board game cafes, etc are the kinds of third spaces that actually enable community in a meaningful way. Not an AMC. At least a local theater will do more community centric programming where the community gets involved. AMC doesn't care.

I feel like it's hard to compare a long standing historical venue to your local corporate movie theater lol. Like yeah no shit other people don't care about the local amc. Now the amc that is in harlem, that you can't tell me would cause as much of a stir if it were to be closing as the one in kips bay.

I live a short walk from the AMC near Penn, and still prefer to take the crosstown bus to the Kips Bay theater when I go see a movie. It’s quieter and I have a better experience. Thankful to have other options, but this is a huge blow to the east side.
