Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I don’t have kids so I’m not up on all the new laws but didn’t child care just become free? I know kids are very expensive (why I don’t have any) but I would think free childcare would be a huge help

  2. Comment

If you tax everybody more so that we can have 2-k childcare that would actually lead to more babies. Daycare/Nannie’s are the biggest reason people can’t afford children in nyc

No, I am comparing my LIVED experience just as you've stated yours above? How much has childcare increased in the last 5 years? How much has housing increased in the last 5 years? How much has health care, car insurance etc. gone up in the last 5 years? I couldn't even shop around for coverage because the two other insurers I contacted said there's a moratorium in place from writing coverage for new customers that live in the 5 boroughs. Things like this limit the option to shop around. No, I can't just "move elsewhere" when my career is built around an industry where living in/near NYC gives the best career opportunities. Living in Jersey City or other nearby options used to be an option, not so much anymore. Why is the average rental in Jamaica, NY almost $2,900?? And that's just for RENT. The whole "can't afford it, move" is part of the larger issue. Also, while you're cursing your head off, my parents immigrated here and I was 1st generation. They got my passport early so we could travel back to visit family, and they prioritized traveling because they could. Here's a report you might want to read: You're using broad national macroeconomic averages to invalidate specific, localized economic realities, which doesn't work. The Federal Reserve report might show record national median incomes, but the September 2026 NYC Comptroller report explicitly found that the real median income in NYC fell by 3.2% between 2019 and 2024. For the bottom 90% of New Yorkers, real income actually declined by 0.8%, and their actual purchasing power currently sits 19% below the national average because of our city's specific cost-of-living penalty.

Oh interesting... Only NYC right? Governor Hochul’s record investments in childcare have now enabled 43 counties across the state to expand childcare access in their communities through CCAP — including in New York City and in 26 counties in other parts of the state that have cleared prior waitlists or had previously closed enrollment. These include: Allegany Cayuga Chemung Chenango Clinton Columbia Delaware Dutchess Erie Franklin Fulton Genesee Greene Hamilton Lewis Livingston Madison Onondaga Rensselaer Rockland Schoharie Sullivan Warren Washington Wayne Yates CCAP is a state-funded program that subsidizes the cost of childcare for low- and middle-income families. The program caps out-of-pocket costs at $15 per week for most families. Since Governor Hochul took office, the State has nearly tripled the number of children served by the program, which now serves approximately 183,000 children across the state. The Governor has also significantly increased the income eligibility threshold, from roughly $55,000 for a family of four to roughly $116,000 for a family of four, ensuring the program serves more families throughout the state.

    > f you reviewed reports that state these numbers and "adjusted for inflation" amounts you would see the discrepancy between the two and how much each have increased. Spoiler: if you assess the wage increase trend and "adjust for inflation" it is so apparent real wages have not kept up with actual current COL whatsoever. This is especially true when you look at how much pricing has increased since 2020. Does this report from the Federal Reserve work for you? Median incomes are at record highs. It's likely that the last two years they have stagnated, thanks to Trump. >I grew up in the outer boroughs and moved back to the same block where I grew up, so hope this gives you a different perspective from "most New Yorkers who complain". I'm glad you moved back to hopefully get more parental support. >You mentioned you live in the Bronx because that's what you can afford? Rentals in my neighborhood go for at least $3k and that's without utilities and other expenses. Factor that with childcare, rising healthcare costs, rising car insurance costs (even when driving older vehicles), rising grocery costs, etc. these are hardly "luxury expenses". You should consider doing what hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have done - move to a more affordable place. It sucks to move, but that's what you can do to get nice house, cars, more vacations, etc. >My parents had me have my first passport at 2 years old and prioritized traveling for our family. Again, this was possible decades ago and they were able to do so because they didn't have the additional expenses that my partner and I have (and that's with them having more than one child). Reading comprehension issue. I'm glad things worked out well for you. Whatever your "lived" experience is you should show some humility and stop extrapolating it out to the rest of society. Less than 10% of Americans had passports decades ago, and now 50% of Americans do. Because Americans have the luxury to travel more often. This is indisputable despite whatever the fuck your parents did, your parents doing something doesn't change that fact. Like, is this something you really think? That Americans were taking more vacations in the 80s and 90s than they do now? That Americans going to more luxurious and more exclusive destinations back then vs now? Is this something you really believe? >All this to say, you speak so definitively as if you know everyone's story. Yet my LIVED experiences directly counteract the tired talking points that actual parents raising children in NYC, I don't know how to explain to you that lived experience doesn't actually counteract facts. "Rents couldn't have risen 5% in the city last year, my LIVED experience was that went up 2%, countering that fact" do you understand how silly that sounds?
