Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

But they dont produce any good? A power plant produces energy we all use. Sewage treatments clean water for us. And both of those tend to be away from densely populated areas for zoning purposes. But a data center? It has max 5 people running it, makes slop on the internet, and potentially puts thousands out of jobs while not offering anything back to society other than the companies that run it more profit. Plus the energy costs that the people whose community its built in who end up subsidizing the datacenter (as weve seen hundreds of reports of peoples energy bills going up with no extra use after the datacenter goes in)

It’s as simple as this - anyone complaining about datacenters in a Reddit comment that is stored in a datacenter is a massive hypocrite.

> unless they were somehow built underground (so no homeowners had to see massive warehouses in their backyard) Bro I give very few fucks about what a homeowner "has to see from their backyard". This sounds like Donald Trump banning wind turbines for being 'ugly'. **Building is not a bad thing**, and everything is in someone's backyard. The fact that America can't build stuff anymore for fear of pissing off some homeowner or another is the reason we're falling behind: it's the reason we can't build more housing, it's the reason we don't have high-speed rail, and it's a reason we don't have more solar and wind generation. Now again, I agree that they should build out power generation as part of the datacenter, so as to balance out any effects they would have on the local electricity grid. And yes, we want closed-loop cooling, so if that's more expensive for the datacenter then tough shit, they have to do it the more expensive way and decide if it's still worthwhile to build. The moratorium is a good idea from this standpoint, because there ISN'T a consensus on a lot of important issues around this at the moment, and it's better to do things slower and right than fast and wrong. But unlike you, I am not approaching this issue from the premise of "building datacenters is bad", I'm approaching it from "what is the best way to build out this massively impactful technology". 95% of stuff on the internet is nonsense too, but that 5% has been incredibly transformative to the world and made possible things we could never have dreamed of before. I certainly wouldn't advocate in the year 2000 to "stop building the internet" because there's slop on it.

LMAO, calling me to look it up instead of you providing a link is hilarious. Im not doing your research. And do you have any data, any sources to back up "99% of datacenters are closed loop"? How about any data to show those "one or two" instances of water poisoning was isolated? Cause I can provide many more than 2 instances. And again, no data, no sources to back up the "no rising costs" bullshit ass response? Totally factually devoide conversation lmao. Get blocked

Yes, unless they were somehow built underground (so no homeowners had to see massive warehouses in their backyard), built completely separate from the civilian grid (has never happened in the entire datacenter building frenzy in america), has a closed loop for cooling (many dont and are still being built by ai companies), and didnt emit noise (again im pretty sure all ai datacenters produce noise pollution), then it is not possible to build "good" datacenters. Plus, i dont like/use AI and find all slop to be useless and generally bad for humanity including chatbots. So these shitty datacenters dont even need to be made in my opinion. But if theyre being made, as i have no choice, i would want them as unintrusive as possible for the communitites that see higher energy costs, giant ugly buildings in their backyards, noise pollution, and degradation of their water supplies because of these buildings.
