This sounds like Donald Trump banning wind turbines for being 'ugly'. **Building is not a bad thing**, and everything is in someone's backyard. The fact that America can't build stuff anymore for fear of pissing off some homeowner or another is the reason we're falling behind: it's the reason we can't build more housing, it's the reason we don't have high-speed rail, and it's a reason we don't have more solar and wind generation. Now again, I agree that they should build out power generation as part of the datacenter, so as to balance out any effects they would have on the local electricity grid. And yes, we want closed-loop cooling, so if that's more expensive for the datacenter then tough shit, they have to do it the more expensive way and decide if it's still worthwhile to build. The moratorium is a good idea from this standpoint, because there ISN'T a consensus on a lot of important issues around this at the moment, and it's better to do things slower and right than fast and wrong. But unlike you, I am not approaching this issue from the premise of "building datacenters is bad", I'm approaching it from "what is the best way to build out this massively impactful technology". 95% of stuff on the internet is nonsense too, but that 5% has been incredibly transformative to the world and made possible things we could never have dreamed of before. I certainly wouldn't advocate in the year 2000 to "stop building the internet" because there's slop on it.

   Then im not sure what your original comment was doing then if you agree with the moratorium? It just seemed like you were putting up defense for datacenters by talking about some fictional good datacenter with self-sustaining power and perfect closed loop system for water that also doesnt lower property values and make the neighborhoods they are in worse

   Sure I don't disagree? And I'm not an opponent of this moratorium. Hochul herself says she views this as a pause intended to give people on all sides the time to come up with some sensible rules on what standards datacenters need to follow, in what ways they need to be required to support the community, and so on. That's a reasonable take that I am not arguing against.

   According to this study, AI datacenters can use up to 5 million gallons of water a day. Bigger ones can use more. And many of them are not close loop circuts yet, so that is water that becomes unusable afterwards because of the treatment of the components they are cooling. As for energy, that only works if the grids are expanded and the capacity is expanded BEFORE we build the million sq ft data centers in our backyards (which look like shit, bring property values down, and produce a ton of noise pollution). The moratorium that you are posting against puts the brakes on the problem as its getting out of hand. You cant offer up "shoulds" while getting upset about real solutions to potentially do what you are asking
