   The rent freeze will make more rent stabilized apartments unprofitable compared to expenses. More of them will sit vacant. Fewer housing units will be available. The housing crisis gets worse. The city stores are not in neighborhoods without stores. There are several stores very close to the Harlem location, including an Aldi and a Costco. More public housing is asinine. There’s NYCHA is $80 billion behind in needed repairs, a gap that crows every year. The city is an awful landlord. Let developers build. Let the city government stick to governing and not being a landlord. These policies are total ass, as are his others. Anyone with even a basic knowledge of economics knows this.

   Have you even done your own research on these policies? Firstly, the rent freeze only applies to rent-stabilized units, not new construction or market-rate housing. It doesn’t touch the incentive to build new supply, which is what would impact the housing crisis. The freeze is about protecting tenants from displacement, preventing the very housing crisis you’re complaining about. Second, city-owned grocery stores is a small pilot program, and is primarily targeting neighborhoods that conventional groceries stores avoid anyways due to profit incentives. So no, they aren’t taking business from existing grocery stores, because those stores aren’t there in the first place. Third, I won’t deny that NYCHA isn’t the best, but that isn’t a reason to forego building public housing. As you mentioned yourself, there’s a serious housing shortage going on. If anything, this is an argument for improving NYCHA alongside increasing public housing, not a reason to stop it altogether. That line of thinking has always been a slippery slope. I get that we’ve been burned by bad politicians who implement half baked policies all the time, but when you dig into policies, you realize that he’s far more thoughtful than any politician has been in the past, and genuinely cares about his constituents.

   They will, but that’s not the worst. To pick some at random - the rent freeze will make the housing crisis worse. City owned grocery stores that don’t have to be profitable will drive existing stores out of business. Expanding public housing given the ridiculous shit show that is NYCHA is laughably stupid. Shall I go on?

Mamdani will never do this because leftists created a patronage network where government needs to grow in order to grow their power. It doesn't matter if the NYC student headcount gets reduced by 50% next year, they'll have to increase the DOE budget because they know who gives them political power. Government spending isn't to provide services, government spending is to grow and maintain your political power.
