   Workers against employers. Doesn't matter whether it's public or private sector. Those public defenders aren't paid enough and their workloads are insane.

   Thats exactly what I mean, thats not enough to attract top talent in NYC. Top talent in the private sector earn 600k to 1 mil+ salaries (depending on the field)

   A discount to private sector is to be expected, but the difference here is nuts. A junior lawyer in biglaw makes more the mayor. There's hundreds, if not thousands, of city workers that make about the same amount.

   i agree. i also think that there are a lot of people in the executive service of governments who are being paid much less than the same job would enable in private sector. If they wanted high caliber people, they should pay people at market levels. What ends up happening instead is a world where all the stuff they can't staff for goes to the private sector anyway through consulting contracts that have charges several times that of an employee paid at the going rate.

   Here we go! Public service has \*ALWAYS\* paid less than private sector. One reason why judges and attorneys often eventually leave public office (and take nice cushy spots with law firms) is usually due to compensation. Being a former judge, city lawyer or whatever looks good on C.V. and can be of use in attracting clients far as that goes... OTOH you also have no small number of attorneys who spend their entire careers working for NYC or NYS. They might make more in private sector/practice but have settled for a steady paycheck along with a pension and other bennies instead.
