   this is likely an unpopular opinion, but i hate when people compare divorce/betrayal to death. i have been cheated on and went through a divorce, and i also lost my brother. both suck. divorce and betrayal are *extremely hard* but it’s not comparable to death. finding out my ex husband was someone else was devastating. but it has nothing on the doctors telling me my brother was dead. at the time my brother passed, one of my friends found out her bf was cheating on her and she kept comparing our grief, saying we relate to the loss of something. yes, you do lose who you thought that person was, but they’re not dead. you know they’re physically here on this earth. yes, they are a crappy person, but they’re physically here and alive. you can be hurt by someone and it doesn’t need to be compared to literal death for others to understand your hurt.

   People are really getting heated at the "boarding school kids are far above the average" and interpreting it to mean they have higher intellect but that's not how I read it. Objectively kids from families who can afford these ultra expensive schools have more resources than the average child. Note we're not talking about all private schools like your local private Catholic school, but the highest tier of ultra expensive elite private boarding schools. They likely never dealt with malnutrition or going hungry, they always had the best diets available to them. They had access to the best healthcare, the best specialists for every issue whereas less privileged families might avoid taking their children to the doctor because they can't afford it (esp in the US). They could play in any sport they wanted, any physical activity or class they wanted from a very young age, whereas many poor or lower class families can't afford sports or ballet classes or whatever, and if you grew up like I did in section 8 housing you can't even play outside because the crime rate is too high. Many of them had access to extracurricular activities like instruments, art classes, language classes with one on one tutors. Kids with these resources are consistently shown to get better grades, better test scores, and better outcomes in life than children without. The most upper echelons can afford tutors for their children to get them one on one support in any subject they're struggling in, even before preschool begins. The average public school has like 23 kids to one teacher in a classroom, and it only takes one or two kids dealing with severe behavioral or intellectual challenges to soak up ALL of the teacher's time. Kids with these challenges are less likely to be admitted to/kept in private schools and kept in regular classes like in public schools, and often behavioral issues stem from issues in the home that are more prevalent in lower class families like neglect, abuse, substance abuse, etc. I am *not* saying that these things don't also occur in rich families but let's not pretend class isn't a factor in this. We can't underestimate the value of time that money provides either. With a single parent or a dual income family where both parents work, there isn't as much time to spend reading to your children, doing intellectual activities with them and teaching them things. Studies show this makes a HUGE impact on outcomes and test scores, especially reading to the child. Rich families may be able to afford one parent being a stay at home parent, or nannies to always be with the children. Poor families cannot do this and statistically tend to read to their children less because they don't have the time. Let's also not pretend the AP selection is the same at every school. Even in my public school district the difference between AP class selection at the poorest lowest funded school in the district located in the poorest area vs the highest funded school located in the wealthier part of town was shocking. Like double the number of AP college credit transferrable classes at the wealthier one, with way more programs offered at the school, pathways to local colleges that weren't offered at the poor school etc. Most the languages you listed absolutely are not commonly offered at public schools. I don't know what kind of elite high income public school you attended but my district had nothing but Spanish and French, starting in 7th grade whereas many private schools start earlier or offer immersion. Very, very few public schools are offering Mandarin, Russian, Latin etc in the US. Maybe it's completely different in Europe or the UK and public schools offer these things but none of that is bog standard in the US. None of this is to say boarding school kids are smarter or inherently more intellectually gifted, and yes they are not guaranteed to have great outcomes and become top politicians, but it is delusional to pretend they don't have infinitely more resources than the average kid and those resources aren't clinically proven in studies to give them massive advantages academically.
