Yeah that’s fair, but the problem often arises when Americans go to Ireland and talk about how they are Irish or to France and talk about how their Canadian husband is French. Then it’s not just “this is our custom, it’s how we do it”, it’s instead “I’m assuming that my country’s custom is the norm everywhere else in the world and you are now supposed to follow along with it even when we’re in your country and also talking about your culture” It’s the obliviousness that makes it annoying for other people

And we only really do it if they are first language French & speak with a strong accent. I definitely call people who are first language French w/ French accent 'French' but I mean French speaking not from France. Although more commonly I call them either Québécois or Acadian. 'Frenchy' is a common nickname for French first language speakers.
