Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I’m honestly not prepared for Ovi to retire. I became a hockey fan at the peak of the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry and I’m not used to an NHL without both of them

  2. Comment

Ehhh I highly disagree. The NHL has its issues, and I won’t be an apologist for that. It also skews conservative and there are obviously issues that come from that too. But the nfl is worse in terms of protecting players. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t separate it and enjoy football any longer. Edited to make things make more sense

They did sexually harass Alex Wennberg in Seattle and I regularly see harassment of San Jose’s younger core. It’s not great and I hate that the NHL is leaning into it. I’m a 30 year hockey fan and enjoyed both HR and OC. Both have themes the NHL should’ve leaned into, inclusivity and protecting victims but no, they’re doing this. I hate it.

  4. Comment

Hey, now that’s not entirely true. Those of us who do know jack shit about hockey just mostly stay shut up about it. I’ve avidly followed the sport for 30 years now (r/hockey is why I joined Reddit…and oh hai it’s my cake day). The state of the league of late, though, has largely soured me. At present, my own team is a clusterfuck on top of a rebuild on top of what once was called a dynasty, and it’s tough to even want to engage with that anymore. tbh while the hockey is a fun setting as a fan of the sport, it’s hardly the most compelling part of the story. It requires more than a dose of belief-suspension, but is at the same time firmly in the category of wish-fulfillment. I mean that in the sense that it’s exposing (and rising above) the toxicity inherent in the NHL and hockey culture in general to a wider audience. And making it next to impossible to ignore by those among us fans who’ve avoided it til now. It’s holding up a mirror and exposing the league’s half-assed DEI initiatives for the phone-in that they are. There’s no authenticity in the wider league messaging. The fact is actually one that HR gets right: there are more accepting teams (eg SJS) who genuinely embrace diversity in their fan base (and I would hope, their locker room). They are but scattered sanctuaries in a league that would largely rather not address it at all if it didn’t make them money selling merch and Pride night tickets.

The organization is 100% the bad guy in Heated Rivalry. NHL Commissioner (Gary Bettman for those who don’t know) is already saying that the commissioner in the books is a fictional character and that he would *never* react the same way, yet this is the man who banned Pride jerseys. You don’t have to watch it, it’s totally fair, I’m not trying to convince you one way or another. Just know that everybody who has read the books knows how toxic the “fictional” NHL world is going to get in season 2 (we’re going to be sobbing in the cottage) and we know that it’s going to be a mirror of its real life counterpart. I just can’t wait for it all to blow up in Gary’s face.
