   Were the male characters written any better? Tom Holland's character/script/performance was hilariously underwhelming compared to others in the movie. Jon Bernthal didn't add anything to the story except some lines delivered like The Punisher. Benny Safdie stood around. Himesh Patel also stood around, but had two lines of dialogue that apparently make him worthy of Best Supporting Actor. The best written characters in this film, in order, are Anne Hatheway, Robert Pattison, John Leguizamo, and Matt Damon. Literally everyone else is a boring, minimal side character. Look... I loved the movie in Dolby and have seen it three times... but it is a straight up empty film when you look past the audio and visuals. It's wrapped up nicely-ish in the last act, but it's really just following Odysseus, with minimal dialogue or thought or action, through a few action sequences.

   Odysseus is much more like Saul Goodman than Walter White, though, he’s tricky and cunning and arrogant and has a vindictive streak and struggles to weigh the cost of his bad decisions against the thrill of making even worse ones. And Jimmy McGill is basically universally loved, to the point of intense hatred for anyone standing in the way of his schemes like early Hamlin or Chuck

   Nolan launders it under the Greek Xenia, but those laws are nothing like what's referred to as Zeus' law in the movie. The "do unto others" formulation that the movie uses is explicitly Christian in origin. And the words actually do matter here because Nolan uses them to set the Sacking of Troy as the original sin of Odysseus for the entire movie. But the idea that the Greeks would have seen the sacking of Troy as a violation of divine law is ahistoric. The Trojan Horse was not considered a war crime and neither was the rape and murder, it was the violation of Athena's temple - *not the priestesses insofar as that act is independent of the sacking of the temple -* that triggered the wrath of the Gods, and other sacrilegious acts that extended his voyage (*including yes - violation of hospitality*). But ultimately the crimes for which Odysseus were punished were hubris, pride, and sacrilege, not being cruel to people for economic gain. That's why in the original tale, he is able to return to a happy life as King, having been humbled, rather than going into exile The movie is more thematically aligned with Oppenheimer than Homer.

He is the cleverest man in the story, yet his need to prove it repeatedly extends the voyage and contributes to the deaths of all his companions. By the time he reaches Ithaca, every one of the men who left Troy with him is dead.
