   I agree that there were many missed opportunities to show more depth in the women characters, however part of the “erosion of civilization” theme is symbolized by the male-driven chaos and havoc throughout the film. The violence against women in Troy (flesh and blood women and stone effigy), the sacrifice of Agamemnon’s daughter, and the scarred face of Helen show the consequences of man’s need for power and control. I think it’s telling that a small return of order after Odysseus’ slaughter of the suitors is marked by the doors opening to reveal Penelope, standing in front of the throne with a stream of water flowing down the steps to erase the bloodshed below.

   I kinda get what she’s saying about the female characters. I named my daughter Penelope after the queen of Ithaca, she’s amazing, creative, intelligent, and I I felt that could’ve been explored more. Also, I really felt like they missed the mark with Odysseus and his pride. Like it kind of felt almost like this was him just stumbling upon bad luck, when in fact his pride was a big part of the problem.

   I saw it as an allegory for ptsd. The entire film he is being asked “why don’t you want to go home?” Then when he gets back to Penelope he says “I’m not home yet” or something along those linesthose lines. People often talk about soldiers physically coming home but mentally never really leaving the war zone. Then we get to see the sack of Troy and we see the girl he has been picturing as Athena and what happens to her.

   Thank you! I studied Classics in school and I love all of it, and there is absolutely a place for accurate detailing of history and historical texts, but like … if I’m happy to give creative license to anything it’s absolutely stories like these where so much of it was already kind of up for interpretation anyway. My biggest gripe with Nolan’s film was that in a lot of cases he didn’t show us Odysseus as a cunning trickster and at a lot of moments made him out to be a bit of a dumb-dumb. I could also complain about the portrayal of Penelope, Circe and Calypso… but that’s par for the course with Nolan and female characters.

   Me too. Any of the family stuff with Odysseus, Penelope and Telemachus or the dog really got me. I was like maybe it’s just my postpartum hormones and anything with a son gets me teary eyed but idk it worked on me
