   They don't need to reach the dermis. Collagen breaks down in the epidermis, and those fragments trigger the creation of more collagen in the epidermis. Skin slows this process as we age. Adding peptides (more fragments) triggers the skin to create more collagen, which restores (some of) the original production levels. Plenty of research on this, just Google.

   [Anti-Aging] do topical peptides actually reach the dermis or are we all just coping? - my actual question is, is the collagen stimulation effect from topical peptides like matrixyl happening because the peptide physically reaches fibroblasts in the dermis, or is it an epidermal signaling cascade that eventually communicates downward, because those are two very different things and the answer changes how much delivery mechanism like liposomal actually matters. Also: if anyone has thoughts on whether long term tretinoin use which thins the stratum corneum actually meaningfully improves peptide penetration to the dermis that would be interesting too. Not trying to say peptides are useless just trying to understand the actual mechanism because the marketing version and the peer reviewed version seem pretty different.

   This is also just wrong. There is no evidence glycolic acid doesn't work at the dermis level as well. Likely it does. She just doesnt state that since the only study was on lactic acid and not glycolic.

   That is true when for in office glycolic acid peels, that is not true for at home glycolic acid products. At home glycolic acid products do not reach or impact the dermis, just the epidermis.

   12:45 The problem with comparing skincare ingredients. She clearly addressed this. An in office glycolic acid peel will work on the dermis level, at home glycolic acid products will only work on the epidermis . However, AmLactin will work on both the dermis and the epidermis.
