Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I still remember the ads a few years ago for men’s makeup that they called ***War Paint*** 😭

It is surprising. I do remember one product being for your "man hide" which was cringe asf. To some extent I'm glad though, because these "male" versions of gender neutral products that many straight men are too insecure to use is predatory asf. But I do think the stigma that taking care of yourself is "unmanly" needs to go away. I just don't think separate "men's" versions are the way to go. I will say I am a straight man. My skin is naturally very dry and in the dry Maine winters I grew up in would occasionally crack to the point of bleeding. I don't have the luxury of worrying about what other people will think of me. Skincare is a necessity. That being said, my girlfriend absolutely loves that I take care of myself, and frankly who wouldn't want a partner who takes care of themselves? (Although for any straight men reading this, do it for yourself anyway.)

And in those movies (particularly the book for American psycho) it was treated as something weird, over obsessed, and yuppie. Like it’s always presented as this overly sophisticated routine instead of just “hey have you tried moisturizing? It’s good for you”. As a man with a decent skincare routine most people I talked to knew of male skincare as a concept, but treated it as odd enough that if it was ever brought it up sometimes they would just quote the American psycho scene as if it gave the same vibe as caring about the shade of white on your business card. Like it would have been more admirable to to just put hand soap for the simplicity. As someone who lives in the American South something as basic as explaining facial sunscreen to people who worked outside all day was always treated like I was talking about lip filler.

Good stuff my man

I see your point re: ads but so many product lines themselves are pretty gender neutral. The whole of The Ordinary, CeraVe, La Roche Posay, etc, for example, and any other brand presenting itself as clinical. My whole shelf personally is blue and white bottles rather than pink products - just by chance So it seems like the gap is more like men in ads and male skincare influencers? Really I think the bigger problem is probably just an automatic association of skincare being feminine, given the amount of products you can already buy that aren't particularly feminine. Or in other words, I don't think the products/bottles need to be masculinized, many brands could market what they already have
