Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Not for myself, but I was a little shocked at how tan my six year old daughter got over a week of swim lesson camp this summer. She clearly inherited her dad’s skin tone because she has about three freckles and I have about three million, and it’s very very rare that I tan. I guess as long as she’s wearing sunscreen (and she’s pretty good about putting it on as long as I give her the roll on sunscreen), I won’t worry about it too much. I’m sure I’d already been burned once or twice at her age so I’m just happy she hasn’t had any burns.

Yes, any tan is the result of inadequate sun protection, and yes, any tan from the sun is damage. I've used self-tanners before and they worked well, didn't turn orange or anything, so that's something you could look into. Def exfoliate well before you apply. Bondi Sands is good (they have a cool-toned one if you're on the cooler side), and I've heard b.tan is good too and also has different tones.

Yes, you can tan with sunscreen. At the risk of the wrath of this sub I will admit I intentionally go to the beach with an SPF 30 in order to get a tan. If you do this with your very fair skin (mine is also quite pale) make sure you are limiting your time in the sun and reapplying at least hourly if you stay out for that long. Pay attention if you start feeling any indication that you might be overdoing it. Cover up if necessary.

Tans mean uv damage unfortunately. I’m extremely pale and sensitive to the sun and I’m unable to tan. In my teens and early 20s, I forced myself to tan with tanning beds but it required burning first. I have spent thousands on lasers and treatments to undo the damage. I’m diligent with sunscreen, sun protective clothing and supplements and use uv shades in my car now.

Being a pale person is rough in the summer when everyone is getting tan and you are in the shade reapplying and adjusting your hat. I tried using bronzer once and it looked like a hate crime. My friends looked like sun goddesses. The science is that your body is extremely bad at protecting itself from too much sun because your ancestors (like mine) all came from places where the people who survived had bodies that took every bit of UV light and converted it into Vitamin D. Your ancestors could not imagine their descendant would be able to access sunlight year round. This tan is a rare and wondrous thing that will be very tough to replicate. Your beautiful pale skin feels like a curse now, but when you get to my age, those years of SPF 50 and hats and finding the shade wherever you are will pay off, OP. I’m 52 and I always get compliments on my skin. While my friends who tanned are getting laser resurfacing and chemical peels, I just keep doing what I’ve always done. Sunscreen, moisturizer, and hats.
