Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

Goal of a business == generate investor return (yes yes that’s why they invest in the first place) Otherwise you can just… keep the money under your mattress Not meeting the goal == failure

if a project pays the rent and keeps me out of a cubicle, i really don't care if an investor calls it a failure.

That’s an invented definition that doesn’t match what anyone means by failure

Did you make a return for investors? If yes, then its not a failure. If you broke even or less then it was not a successful investment. Maybe personally to a founder, but not to investors.

Well I read it. OP said I made it up. I showed that I didn't make it up. Yes, you can call yourself a startup without taking venture money. But the stats about startup failure or success (the point of this thread) are generally going to be about startups that can be tracked. And they are generally going to be the startups in a venture portfolio. The startups that are a side hustle or self-funded are less visible, and not as easy to set success criteria.
