Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

I’m learning that everyone assumes people in startups are engineers who are capable of creating their own startup. I am not an engineer. I do not create and build code. Of course FAANG RSUs would be worth more, if I stay another 4 years to vest them all. But the entire team will be laid off in 6-8 months. Why not wait until you’re laid off? Because the severance is shit. And then puts me even further behind in the job market. FAANGs and Startups will always be there when you’re ready. No, this job market is tough. The FAANG on my resume has meant nothing to any potential employer over the last year of applying. They are not impressed by the company, startup and other large corporations only care about real experience.

If you want to bump your resume as your main goal, you’re better off using your talent to build things and try to find community of people who want to be part of it. You decide that culture yourself rather than join another company’s culture you don’t control. On the money side (if that matters to you): equity share in startup world is just a fantasy lottery ticket. There is no guarantee. Especially in fintech. Most of time (like 99%) employee equity in fintech is just bait for talent that never materialize. Series A + fintech + startup has no work life balance. Anyone selling you that is lying. It might be less crazy than FAANG but it will be ruthless in its own way if it’s B2B. If it’s series A now and they continue to succeed, they will raise more and your equity share will continue to get diluted and worth less and less. If they exit after unicorn status, is your forfeited FAANG RSUs going to be worth more?

The thing people don’t seem to understand is that your WLB is already not great, and your job not that good. Yes you loose money in the short term but you might earn more LT, and you could maybe even come back if things don’t work out. It’s not like you are leaving a very cushy corporate position for chaos. Also on comp, if you are at big tech, most likely anything will be lower in terms of total comp. RSUs are golden handcuff, same for annual bonus. I’m in the same situation. Left a well paying « corporate » job for a fintech serie A. In reality, my previous company was more likely a startup inside a big corporate so I don’t expect much changes, but better outcome and career.

The movement to the startup will be a promotion and a better look on my resume. I want to clarify I am not an engineer anymore. I moved into the ITIL space handling large scale events and this role is leading engineers for support issues. Main reasons for leaving: 1. Career is dead at this company. It will be replaced by contractors sooner than later and there is no where to transfer to that doesn't require moving across the country. 2. Work-life balance is a mixed bag. I am remote but that can be pulled at any time once they realize we are remote. I work a shift W-Sat until 9pm. I've done this for nearly 4 years and I'm over it. The goal posts are always moved when I can transition to a normal shift. 3. RSUs may be liquid but they'll handcuff me forever if I wait for them to vest. I recognize how it helped supplement base pay but I can't stay just for them. Granted the equity I get from the startup is effectively worthless but I'm not looking at a startup for that. I'm looking at any opportunity.

What are the two or three main reasons that you're transitioning? Is it that you're looking to grow faster into managerial roles, or are you expecting this to be an improvement in terms of finances? Or is the environment in your current company uncomfortable or toxic? I worked at two moderately successful NYC fintechs , and I can tell you that you will never have the same work-life balance at a startup as you will in big tech unless you are the exception. You will generally do worse in comp because RSUs are liquid and your equity is not. Also, salaries typically are higher at big tech than at startups. The one reason that you should be transitioning is if you're looking to make significant managerial progress in the next few years, and you get lucky with the team is growing rapidly, and you're willing to put in the type of hours that dwarf all of your teammates and demonstrate that you deserve the managerial position over somebody else.
