Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

You're a physis grad that worked in the nonexistant field of data centers in spae?

Do you think the American government will allow Chinese chips to be used in data centers? It's such an obvious security risk.

  3. Comment

Technology gets cheaper and more efficient over time. What is not financially viable right now can easily become financially viable in the future. Structures in low earth orbit like the ISS and Tiangong already exist. Data centers already exist. Combining the two is not some massively farfetched idea like making a Star Trek Replicator. OP's numbers are complete bullshit, I can agree with you there, I just don't think the concept is absurd.

Former satellite thermal engineer. Assuming your radiators can reject 100 W /m\^2, you would need 1 square kilometer of radiator just to dissipate 100 MW of data center heat, which is on the very low end of capacity these days. For reference, if the data center was in low earth orbit (which it probably would need to be to keep launch costs down) that would blot out about 10% of the Moon's face. At 12 kg/m\^2 of radiator, that would be a 12 million kg payload, or $18 Billion using SpaceX's cheapest current launch costs with Falcon Heavy. Even if they hit the very optimistic $100/kg with starship, that's still over a billion dollars JUST IN RADIATORS for a small data center. So basically you're gonna spend more on radiators alone than chips, and chips currently make up about 80% of the annualized cost. You would be much better off welding stainless steel boxes around a bunch of servers and sinking them in the ocean, and then paying technicians underwater diver hazard pay to do any maintenance. Literally 100x better cooling, and you don't need hundreds or thousands of dollars per pound just to put it in place. Guarantee you not a single person who thinks this is a good idea has any idea what the Stefan-boltzmann law is. I bet the engineers know it's a scam, but the higher ups are trying to push the idea the pump their bags.

they also own data centers and LLM for drug discovery, obviously they are up.
