Each point is a seven-day rolling window of complete UTC days; a point is comparable only when at least 100 analyzed posts or comments fall inside it. A day with no analyzed records counts as zero; missing coverage is marked and never shown as zero. The series ends at the latest complete analyzed day — it never extends into the current incomplete day. How attention is measured.

OP concerts!!!! You go there with all like minded people who love the music. I guess it depends on what kind of concerts elder emo shows are 🔥

This is weirdly specific. Maybe I’m old now but I can’t stand loud noises. Concerts irritate me and tv above 40% annoy me

I feel this, but I think the best answer I have is it just takes intentional dedicated effort and a whole lotta luck. The thing that ended up working for me was randomly finding a singer singing fantasy folk music on Spotify that I liked. Spotify notified me that they happened to have a small concert in my city in a few weeks. It was $25 bucks and even though I barely listened to them yet, I said fuck it, fantansy folk is great, let's go. The kicker, though, is that I could have gone and just enjoyed the concert. I've done it before. But this is also where the luck comes in. I have a habit of being open to interjecting myself into random strangers' conversations when we're stuck in queues together. So this pair of guys behind me were chatting, one was clearly a fan of the artist and the other hadn't even heard of the genre before and was getting a quick run down of the sorts of people that make up the fan base. So when he said "most of these folks are reading fantasy books" I was literally reading a fantasy book on my phone that moment and so slotted myself in by half turning and gesturing to my phone and saying "like me!" not expecting them to do anything but give acknowledgement and continue. Luckily, the fan was excited about it and asked what I was reading and we hit it off from there. And now I have four new friends who literally had never met each other before that night except for the first two who had met each other just once before. Usually, interjecting myself into convos with random queue neighbors doesn't lead to friendship but it does lead to some very cool or funny moments. I just got lucky. But luck is something you can foster. And sometimes it requires impulsively leaning into your passion interests. The concerts I usually go to are Metal, but, while I listen to tons of metal music, I am terrible at knowing anything about the bands or the singers or even remembering song names or lyrics. Same applies to the fantasy folk music, but with fantasy folk music, my deep and passionate love for fantasy books and writing fantasy and playing fantasy games and supporting fantasy artists tied in. It's also a music genre that attracts similarly passionate people with a higher chance of great overlap in interests (compared to metal). I took a chance on a singer I literally just discovered and had listened to two songs from. And I continued my habit of talking to strangers in queues despite being an introvert. It's a numbers game, which sucks, but it's true. Just gotta keep stacking the odds in your favor. One day you might get lucky. But to get lucky you have to put in the work to make the luck happen. So that's my recommendation. Lean into your passion interests and go to events that give you opportunities to chat with random strangers in random settings. Especially choose events that have a high chance of attracting other passionately interested people who may have a high chance of greater shared interests with you. And then...talk to strangers. You don't even have to talk for long. A few sentences back and forth are generally enough to read the vibe and see if there's a chance for longer convo. Even if there is it doesn't mean new friend, but it will likely make for a beautiful memory at the least. Which gives you more conversational stories to bring up in later attempts. And then...follow up. Get contact info, go to more similar events together at the very least. Build the friendship. When we were in school we were around each other constantly. Hours and hours of presence. In adult life we don't have that unless we're coworkers or volunteering together usually. So we have to force those hours to happen. So hang out as often as you can without making it detrimental. Also, communicate. I agree though that the seemingly fewer and fewer true third spaces is an issue because having them would make this all take less effort.

people say hobbies because it’s so much easier to connect with someone while already doing something you both enjoy. join a book club. play local poker tournaments. dog parks. imo bars are the worst place to meet people. bars are where you go with people you already know. same with night clubs and concerts. your odds of hitting it off with someone at the rock climbing gym are infinitely better than on a noisy dark crowded dance floor

You don’t need to joint 6 different hobbies to make 6 friends… hell I made 2 new friends just going to a local city council meeting last month. We are getting together on Saturday for a BBQ and I just met this couple a month ago just sitting near them, and talking. I’ve made lifelong friends at concerts and shows, I’ve made friends at conventions, I’ve be made friends at in bowling league, at Friday night game night at the local LCS, at school pickup talking to other parents… my current best friend is someone I met at school pickup… one of my good friends I met in a record shop.. I even have made friends while fishing. On my own. (These are just instances where I was by myself and not with a friend or my wife, because of the point you brought up, there’s a lot more examples I can give if I am including when someone is with me) I have to imagine it’s easier in more populated areas with more places to go and more fun stuff to do where people would be.. but one way it’s not gonna happen is if people stay at home and do t go out into the world and do stuff, activities and social type things.
