   I go play magic the gathering at a local store. Most people there are in their late 20s early 30s. Most would love to hang out. I've met a while bunch of people that I enjoy talking to, hanging out, one of them throws big parties like old school 90s parties but with mtg thrown in. It's awesome.

   There were girls in my friend group who would party and date older men, I would tell my parents, tell teachers, nothing ever happened, nothing was ever investigated back then. 30 year old men picking up 16 year old girls from high school. Disgusting.

   Ugh. Yeah, I grew up a girl surrounded by those sorts of men. My brother and I have had some really deep conversations about the differences and similarities in our experiences. He overheard conversations where I was the topic. And, of course, I was well aware of the men that tried it with me. Being a 14 year old invited to stay over and party by a 40 year old made it all pretty clear.

   I got rid of all social media (except Reddit) because of this. In order for me to make new friends and maintain my old ones, I treat my friendships like I would a job almost. Put in the time, follow up, schedule, budget, plan, reschedule, text, voice memo, call, plan a party, even if not many people come, plan another party, etc. I’ve done meetups, online friendship apps, joined 3 book clubs, gone to local events. Once I had kids I joined mom groups, mom friend apps, baby and toddler classes, library groups. It is a lot of work and people are very reserved and nervous. It helps that I’m a naturally outgoing and extroverted person, but even then I find it really challenging. I personally think all the effort I put it in is worth it for the people I’ve met and continue to meet, but it can be very draining, and I wish it wasn’t this hard. I detest social media, hate it with a passion, and am trying to do my part to combat the social norms associated with it. Hang in there. Feeling isolated is a terrible feeling—we weren’t meant to live like this.
