   I do live in Europe now but I grew up in the US. I guess I just don’t get what difference all that makes. To me it’s about social bonds and friendship. Of course if people live far away from you that’s another issue. But it’s not a huge deal to cook for people once in a while and then rotate. That’s how my parents did it with their circle of friends when folks didn’t have a lot of money. Then again, we were immigrants and our culture is more collective and social so maybe this is mostly a white people thing lol

   It's not even a US thing. It's a "northeastern US thing". I've never seen Amish anything in my 40+ years in this country

   I'm not in the US but I've seen a handful of documentaries about them on youtube and found their lifestyle to be quite interesting! especially with how they maintain heat/cool in their living spaces and how they preserve food oh and also how they use gas to refrigerate stuff? Anyway, I may be the exception here...

   Are they really objectively getting better compared to 10-12 years ago? At least in the US, that seemed to be the point where we hit a bit of a ceiling and have been regressing downhill ever since. We all had the internet and 24/7 news telling us about atrocoties in the late 00s-early 10s, but you could still track the progress. FF to where we're at now and I was not expecting pedophilia and Nazism to make a comeback, or even the smallest regressions of bringing back 'No Homo' or the R word. On a human level we are losing rights instead of gaining them, and it's not even to our future robot overlords yet!

   Even in the US it's not the case. I live on the west coast and have no real concept of Amish.
